Consider the Poor

1 Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him; 2 the Lord protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies. 3 The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health.

Psalm 41:1-3 ESV

Do I consider the poor? Or do I go about life only concerned about myself, family, and friends? We ought to consider the poor because Jesus did:

  • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” - Luke 4:18 ESV

  • But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind - Luke 14:13 ESV

  • Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” - Matthew 19:21 ESV

Another reason we should consider the poor is because God will bless us by providing protection, status, and restoring health for example. It is wise to do things that you'll be rewarded for both on earth and in heaven.
