Get Rich Quick
Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.
Proverbs 13:11 NLT
As a Christian we should seek to work hard in whatever we put our hands to. In this verse "get-rich schemes" alludes to cutting corners, in ways that wouldn't be pleasing to God.
Years ago I got the idea that I was going to play Blackjack as a part-time job. Everyday I'd make a trip to the local casino after work, and for two weeks it was working great. The key I thought was to cut my loses at about $200 and live to fight another day; because I knew that in the past I struggled to do this. Long story short after about 2 weeks of winning every night, I had a night where I started to lose badly. Did I stop after $200? Nope. In one night I lost all my profits, and then some. I can't remember the exact amount but it was somewhere around $3,000, and money I really needed at the time.
I no longer gamble.
One thing that God showed me in this experience is that He owns all and He sees all. Job's words come to mind, "He said, “I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord! (Job 1:21 NLT)”" He allowed me to make the money, and he allowed me to lose the money. We can't scheme against God.
