Should I Tithe?

7 Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “But you ask, ‘How can we return when we have never gone away?’ 8 “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me! “But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’ “You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. 9 You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!

Malachi 3:7-10 NLT

The topic of tithing can be a touchy subject, and I won’t pretend to be an expert on it; but Malachi seems to offer a great reason to consider it.

Now, should you tithe as a Christian? My opinion is yes. Do you have to tithe as a Christian? Maybe not, but why wouldn’t you? Is it because you believe that the tithe no longer applies to New Testament Christians? Is it because you believe you can’t afford to tithe? Do you believe it’s legalistic to do so? If you aren’t at least tithing have you ever tested God is this area by faith according to Malachi 3:10?

Personally, tithing is not something that I’ve done consistently throughout my Christian life; but it’s a starting point that I’d strongly recommend to all Christians. But why just stop at 10%? Over time consider increasing the percentage and amount that you give to your local church and other Christian ministries, “for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
