Favoritism

1 My brothers, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. 2 For example, a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in. 3 If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,” 4 haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

James 2:1-4 HCSB

We shouldn't treat people differently based on their appearance. Instead we ought to be like God, for "God is not partial to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of His hands (Job 34-19 HCSB)."

But isn't it usually the case that the rich are treated more favorably than the poor? Don't many want to be rich just so they can obtain such status, and be treated in such ways? Yet here's another example of how the Christian is called to be different from the world. Even if we become "rich" we shouldn't seek to be treated any differently than someone who is "poor."
