Free of Charge

5 Jesus sent out these 12 after giving them instructions: “Don’t take the road leading to other nations, and don’t enter any Samaritan town. 6 Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, announce this: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, drive out demons. You have received free of charge; give free of charge. 9 Don’t take along gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts. 10 Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a walking stick, for the worker is worthy of his food.

Matthew 10:5-10 HCSB

The apostles received the Gospel free of charge, and Jesus calls them to give the Gospel free of charge; and empowers them to do many of the same signs He had done in His earthly ministry. Furthermore He instructed the apostles to not take money or extra material possessions; leaving them dependent on the people they were serving to meet their needs. As the CSB Tony Evans Study Bible puts it, "They were not to charge money for their ministry, but they could accept support." Ultimately Jesus was teaching the apostles to be dependent on Him for all their needs, and we should do the same. God can provide for our needs in many ways (i.e. job, business, investments, gifts, etc.), but let's not forget it's God who is behind it all sustaining us.
