The Magnificat

50 His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear Him. 51 He has done a mighty deed with His arm; He has scattered the proud because of the thoughts of their hearts; 52 He has toppled the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

Luke 1:51-53 HCSB

These verses were prayed by Mary (while pregnant with Jesus), while visiting her cousin Elizabeth (who was pregnant with John the Baptist at the time). It's a portion of a larger collection of verses called the Magnificat or Mary's Song of Praise.

Ultimately God is in control:

  • "For He tells Moses: I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it does not depend on human will or effort but on God who shows mercy" (Romans 9:15-16 HCSB)

  • "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6b HCSB)

  • “‘Son,’ Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony" (Luke 16:25 HCSB)
